Directions

Dealing with student’s special dietary needs has become a critical issue in our school nutrition programs.  Hear from Registered Dietitians who specialize in creating both modified and individualized diets for school districts, and working these into operations, and school regulations.  We will also have a Q&A with an expert panel of Registered Dietitians from state agency and school districts across Michigan.

Presenters: 

Wen Guo, RDN: 

Wen Guo has been the nutrition service supervisor at Warren Consolidated Schools (WCS) for four and half years. Wen's main responsibilities are overseeing operations at central kitchen and elementary schools, menu planning and managing special dietary needs of WCS students and students at Macomb Intermediate School District. 

Wen earned her Master's degree in Human Nutrition at Michigan State University (MSU). She then completed her dietetic internship at MSU in 2013. Prior to working as a school nutrition professional, Wen was a clinical dietitian for two years.  

Emily DeArmit, RDN:

Food and Nutrition Services Director at Chippewa Valley Schools. This is Emily's fourth year with Chippewa Valley Schools. Emily was previously the dietitian/food services coordinator, and this is her first year as a director. Emily has been a Registered Dietitian for six years. She started her career as a clinical dietitian but have found her passion in child and school nutrition.

Aaron Halama, RDN:

Aaron graduated with a BS in Dietetics from Eastern Michigan University in April 2019. He joined Detroit Public Schools Community District in January 2020 as the district Registered Dietitian, working to better serve students with special dietary needs. His passion is to inspire students to make better dietary choices and improve the health of future generations. 

Emily Mattern, RDN: 

Emily Mattern is a registered dietitian and has worked in and around Child Nutrition Programs for 20 years. She has served as a food service director, worked for broadline food distribution company and the Dairy Council. She currently is a School District Consultant with the Michigan Department of Education.
