President’s Message

Welcome back to another school year of feeding Michigan 's children while at school! Did you know that millions of meals are served at Michigan schools over the course of a year? Did you know that of the thousands of school nutrition professionals employed to prepare and serve those meals only 1670 are members of our organization? Did you know that YOU can help our organization grow by inviting a co-worker to become involved? Here's how.
First, take a look at why YOU are a member. Is it because your employer pays for your membership? That's great, but in this tight economic time that is a luxury some school budgets can no longer support. So, if you are paying for your membership yourself just what is it that keeps you a member?
The tangible perks of membership are that you receive this publication two times a year and three newsletters, too. You also receive a break on class fees if you want to take one of the many diverse courses offered through our Statewide Training Program. There are opportunities for scholarships to complete a GED or take college classes. You are invited to attend our yearly conference (which will be held October 23-26, 2008 at Boyne Mountain Resort). However, those “intangible” reasons are really the heart of our involvement. For example, it is in giving of ourselves (time and effort) that we receive fulfillment. It is in contributing that makes us feel valuable. Recognizing that every student we touch with nourishment helps them be successful at school.
Enjoy your work and be proud that you are a member of our organization. Invite a co-worker to become a member, too. The cost is only about $42.00 per year (more if you are a Director) and the payoff is priceless!
