Dear Food Service Directors,

As food service directors, you’re the strongest advocates out there for child nutrition in our schools. You are the experts in providing healthy and tasty meals to students throughout the year. The School Nutrition Association of Michigan (SNAM) wants to help educate our legislators about how school food works and how it is impacted with the guidelines that our lawmakers set. It is really important that we express to our legislators the need for flexibility in regulations, as well as the need for increased funding for our programs. Join us in a grassroots effort to bring the real faces of school food service to our lawmakers.

During the month of March SNAM is encouraging directors to host a Legislators 2 Lunch event in their districts. We understand that this month may not work for all schools, but this is the time when legislators are not in session and many of them will be home in their districts. We urge you to choose a day in another week near this targeted timeframe.

To assist you in this, we have created a toolkit to help make your event successful. Items included are (see below):

  • Legislator invitation letter template
  • Event checklist
  • Visit agenda & talking points
  • Legislator takeaway document
  • Thank you letter
  • Post visit survey to legislator
  • Post visit survey to SNAM legislative chair about the event

Your area representative will be your resource, if you have any questions or need help with the event. For a list of area reps. please go to http://michigansna.org/content.php?page=SNAM_Area_Representatives.

Also, please feel free to reach out to the chair of area representatives at chairofareareps@michigansna.org for more information or tips on interacting with the legislators. We hope that you will consider participating in this very impactful event.

Thank you for helping make school food service a success for students.
